So, after being told by Geek Squad that I'd need to to stage two or three recovery ($600-1500 and up) to retrieve anything from my hard drive, I started digging around for people I know who might be able to do it for less money. I had some family members ask around too. Someone who works for my aunt stepped up and said he would take a look at it for me, so I gave it to him a week ago and he's worked on it nonstop since then. He put almost 30 hours into it and was able to recover everything. As a professional contractor he usually charges $89 an hour to work on computers, but after hearing about my situation, he only charged me $190, and that includes the cost of the 2 TB external hard drive he bought to copy the data to.
Going through all the data now, it looks like only about 5% of it is damaged, but all of the important stuff is intact and still usable. I'm so, so relieved that it got worked out, and I'm extremely thankful for the guy to put so much work into it for such a small cost. I gave him one of my business cards and told him that if he ever needs anything, I'd be glad to make it up to him.
Now my laptop is en route to the manufacturer to have the bad hard drive replaced. It's still going to be quite a task to reinstall everything that was on it before, but at least I haven't lost all of my art and other projects.
In other news, I'm going on vacation to Colorado Springs with my family at the end of the month. I don't know where exactly we plan to visit, but it should be fun! And my laptop will be ready for me to pick up as soon as I'm back, so I look forward to that.
Only five weeks left of summer. Darn you and your quickness!
Also, my birthday's in 19 days. notthatanyonecares~
That's all for now. Hawk out.

Leaving DA
Due to this site's support for AI art I will no longer be uploading my work here and will probably cease using this site altogether. It's been a good run, 14 years and all. I met some of my oldest and best friends here and it's hard to watch where this site is heading. Thanks to everyone who has followed and supported me even during my long periods of inactivity. I will leave my gallery up for the time being. I don't currently have an alternative in mind but I will update later if I figure something out. Here's a brief essay I wrote recently on the subject of AI art if anyone wants to read. https://humancommabeing.wordpress.com/2022/11/29/on-the-problem-of-ai-art/
I've published a book!
Hey folks, I just wanted to announce that the book I mentioned in my status update last year has been published and is available to purchase now. It's a work of phenomenology, cultural critique, and political theory that explores the problems involved in our search for a sense of identity and belonging, particularly under 21st century social, economic, and political conditions. The book is available through Barnes & Noble here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-crisis-of-individuality-jordan-smirl/1140864876?ean=9781668599075 You can also read more about the book on my website here: https://humancommabeing.wordpress.com/the-crisis-of-individuality/ If you'd like to purchase a copy of the book but can't get Barnes & Noble to ship to your country, send me a note and I can arrange to ship you a copy myself. Also, if you haven't visited my new site before, I recommend checking it out! I've written essays on a variety of subjects including video games as art, the implications of

My significant other has an account here now. She does a mixture of urban photography, collages, and drawings. If you like creepy, surreal, and abstract stuff, you'd probably enjoy her art. Go give her some love!
We're Pressing Charges...
My girlfriend and I went to court today to take action against her abuser. Somehow this guy, who doesn't have a job, was able to hire a lawyer to get our case dismissed due to an issue with the jurisdiction.
Despite this roadblock, I'm not going to let the guy off the hook. Right now we're raising money to hire a better lawyer in the right jurisdiction to press charges against him. If you can, please donate to our GoFundMe campaign here: https://www.gofundme.com/legal-action-against-arlen039s-abuser
